A decade ago, Solana Beach had a relatively healthy back beach; this coastline then had virtually no erosion.

Save the bluffs,
rebuild the beach...

it's the right thing to do!

Four Myths

Myth #1:
Seawalls cause beach erosion and contribute to the disappearance of sand.

The Truth: A number of experts at the University of California and elsewhere, have empirical scientific evidence that the movement of sand on our beaches is directly related to storms and littoral cell action of the ocean. Seawalls do not cause beach erosion.

Myth #2:
The bluffs, left to erode and crumble will replenish sand and maintain beach health.

The Truth: Studies have shown that the Solana Beach bluffs yield a mere few thousand cubic yards per year, a small fraction compared to the input from rivers of about 200,000 cubic yards per year.

Myth #3:
Planned retreat" is a viable policy.

The Truth: "Planned retreat" is the process of giving up under the guise of attaining natural beauty. This concept has been frequently discussed, but never successfully implemented. "Planned retreat" would be a disaster for Solana Beach. Planned retreat is the unconstitutional taking of property rights.

Myth #4:
Seawalls are bad and ruin our shoreline.

The Truth: Seawalls are good and are a public benefit. They:

  1. Protect the public safety of beach goers
  2. Promote public beach access and recreational activities on the beach
  3. Physically protect the bluffs and their natural beauty
  4. Protect property values of the bluff top properties, neighboring properties and the related tax revenues
  5. Protect the public infrastructure
  6. Contribute to the long term health and wealth of the community
